Frequently asked questions
Markets are groupings of real geographic regions that a merchant can define within the Markets admin to customize the experience of their storefront for different groups.
For example, a merchant can create a market composed of one country called “Germany” or create a market with multiple countries called “Europe.” How markets are organized and customized depends on each merchant’s own global selling strategy.
Markets allows you to localize your storefront for different markets, so customers in each market get an optimized and familiar shopping experience for their location. This can include language translation, local currencies, localized domains and geolocation recommendations, payment methods that are specific to certain regions, as well as a consolidated dashboard that lets you monitor and compare the performance of each market. A Recommendations feature suggests best practices and curated tips to find the best product-market fit and help your store perform better internationally.
All the features of Markets are managed from a powerful admin tool that’s centralized within Shopify. This enables merchants to easily manage pricing, catalogs, collected duties, and more–making international selling flexible and efficient.
Markets also works harmoniously with Markets Pro (currently in limited early access in the United States), a suite of cross-border selling features that make it easier to scale internationally.
For more information on how Markets works, visit the Help Center.
Markets is all about localization. It’s a collection of features designed to optimize and localize storefront experiences for international markets. These can be activated à la carte based on each merchant’s needs and global selling strategy, and applicable fees are charged per transaction.
Markets Pro is all about simplifying your international operations to sell with less complexity and risk. It’s an expansion suite of features that removes much of the responsibility of cross-border sales management, because Shopify handles those aspects instead of the merchant. Markets Pro features are bundled with the Markets localization tools under one transaction-based fee, so merchants using Markets Pro also have access to all features offered with Markets.
Markets enables merchants to easily and efficiently optimize their storefront for different geographic regions from one central back-end admin and a single storefront.
Expansion stores are separate Shopify stores that require individual setup to provide optimized, region-specific experiences to buyers. While expansion stores offer a higher degree of flexibility for some elements of localization, they also require a significant amount of setup time to optimize and manage each store.
Whether a merchant uses Markets, expansion stores, or a combination of both may be dependent on many factors in their unique global selling strategy. While Markets is not a replacement for expansion stores, it’s a solution that provides most of the same benefits and a more streamlined process.
You can find Markets in the Settings section of your Shopify admin. Click on “Add market” to get started, and activate a market for a country/region that you want to target with a localized buying experience.
As soon as you activate a market, a selection of features are automatically enabled:
- Local currency
- URL subfolders
- Storefront redirects or recommendations via the Geolocation app
From there, you can continue to optimize your market-specific settings.
Pro tip: follow the hints in the Recommendations bar to get the most out of Markets.
For more information on setting up Markets, visit the Help Center.
Most features in Markets are free to use with a Shopify subscription. Features with a fee use a transaction fee-based pricing model.
- 0.85% fee per order when duties and import taxes are calculated with Shopify Payments; 1.5% fee when using an alternative payment provider.
- 2.0% fee (1.5% in the United States) per order when currency is converted with Shopify Payments.
- Fees for using local payment methods are included as part of Shopify Payments international payment processing.
For information on bundled Markets Pro pricing, log in to your Shopify account and visit the Markets Pro application page.
Markets Pro uses a pay-as-you-go model, so you can try it out for any length of time and choose to deactivate any time you want.
Markets Pro is currently in Early Access in the United States, so a limited number of merchants are currently able to apply. Log in to your Shopify account for more details and to check your eligibility.
